Born into poverty on the outskirts of Accra as Abedi Ayew in the mid-1960s, such was his talent as a youngster that he was given the nickname ‘Pelé’ while learning to play on the red dirt streets. Always precocious, he drew national plaudits before he was a teenager and signed his first professional contract with newly formed Real Tamale United (Ghana) in 1978.
